Description
|
There is an urgent used to establish an integrated orchid conservation strategy involving both in situ and ex situ methodologies. OSSSU is a global network of people and institutions from a wide range of backgrounds sharing knowledge and experties. Participants have generated data on the seed biology of orchids, focusing upon storage at sub-zero temperatures and monitoring changes in viability with time. Germinations of more than 300 species has been compared on one medium (Knudson C) in support of investigating the species specific responses to different formulae. By identifying those species considered short-lived in storage, techniques can be developed to facilitate their routine storage. Many plants regenerated from this work are used to enhance living collections, and for ex situ conservation programmes. Our OSSSU website provides a valuable resource for all orchid biotechnologists providing references to the latest scientific investigations into related topics.
