Description

Corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum Becc.) is one of exotic plant collection in Bogor Botanic Gardens, particularly during its flowering. Besides its giant inflorescence, the stinking like corpse is the uniqueness of this species. The bad smell is a biological process throughout blooming period. This research had tried to isolate bacteria particularly the one which play metabolism role in stinking production. Isolation has been carried out by conventional method based on morphology and physiology characters. The result showed that 20 species of bacteria isolate have been found from apart of plant and also from soil, of which 9 species produced specific corpse smell. Two isolate had identified as Pseudomonas ochracea and P. cepacia which is known to perform metabolism, produced ammina gas and diammina gas. Each smell fish and corpse. There is one bacteria isolate i.e. Flavobacterium that produced fresh flower aroma.
