Mapping technique has not been popular in holothurian monitoring procedures. We introduced the use of global positioning system to determine the local distribution pattern and estimate the individual number of Holothuria albiventer al Medana Bay, West Lombok, Indonesia. During ebb tide in the afternoon, when Holothuria albiventer were exposed, each individual found was marked and their positions were subsequently overlaid on a thematic map of Medana Bay. The results showed that 408 individuals of the species aggregated on a specific site of 894,47 m2, where coverage area of the sea grass reached 90%. Map of the distribution of holothurian populations in particular areas facilitated accuracy in estimating the potential of any holothurian species, and efficiency in monitoring efforts.

Perairan laut Pulau Pari merupakan perairan yang direncanakan untuk kepentingan budidaya, oleh karena itu penelitian terhadap kualitas perairan ini menjadi sangat penting. Salah satu parameter untuk menilai kualitas suatu perairan budidaya adalah kondisi mikrobiologisnya. Penelitian tentang kondisi mikrobiologis perairan laut P. Pari telah dilakukan pada Mei dan Oktober 2010. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melakukan pemantauan kondisi kualitas perairan laut P. Pari yang akan digunakan untuk kepentingan budidaya ditinjau dari aspek mikrobiologisnya. Parameter mikrobiologis yang dianalisis adalah kepadatan total bakteri koli, isolasi bakteri patogen, bakteri heterotrofik dan kepadatan total sel. Analisis total bakteri koli menggunakan metode filtrasi, identifikasi bakteri patogen dilakukan uji biokimia, dan metode tuang untuk analisis kepadatan bakteri heterotrofik. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah kepadatan total bakteri koliform sangat tinggi yang terdapat di perairan P. Pari yakni sebesar 7.000-7.640 unit pembentukan koloni (upk)/100ml. Kepadatan bakteri heterotrofik di perairan berkisar antara (5-10) x 105 upk/ml, kepadatan bakteri heterotrofik di sedimen (40-45) x 105 upk/ml. Jumlah total sel sebesar (49-9.400) x 106 sel/ml. Siput gonggong (Strombus turturella) dan kerang darah (Anadara granosa) dapat hidup dan pertumbuhannya signifikan dengan memanfaatkan serasah dan substrat di padang lamun dengan pertumbuhan cangkang yang relatif baik yaitu rata-rata mencapai 2 mm/hari dan 0,44 mm/hari. Selama pertumbuhan siput dan kerang terdapat bakteri patogen dengan beberapa marga yang dianggap tidak berbahaya seperti Aeromonas, Citrobacter, Pseudomonas, Proteus, Yersinia dan Shigella. Pengukuran kesuburan perairan menggunakan pengamatan unsur hara di perairan dan sedimen serta kepadatan planktonnya. Kesimpulan penelitian adalah produktifitas perairan P. Pari sangat baik kondisinya didukung oleh serasah, kepadatan bakteri heterotrofik dan plankton sehingga dapat digunakan untuk budidaya kekerangan siput gonggong (Strombus turturella) dan kerang darah (Anadara granosa).
